Across the Border is a research project about participatory models that brought Italian artist Filippo Minelli to travel for ten years, establishing a network of performers and producing a series of flags of which the latest have been made for Manifesta 12 art biennale.
The catalogue of the exhibition is the fourth among the catalogues designed since 2018 for the shows curated by UNA art gallery for Milan’s Spazio Leonardo.

The layout arrangement has been entirely redesigned compared to other catalogues issued by Spazio Leonardo in order to enjoy stronger dynamism, at the same time keeping a clear consistency with the previous publications.
The typographic modular grid, in particular, has been redesigned changing from 10 to 11 rows and from 6 to 5 columns, also featuring a double matrix scheme that allowed to multiply the columns in case of need.
In this way, it was possible to produce a more dynamic composition of the pages, at the same time respecting the original proportions of the photographs.

“Flags, made by performers from around the world, become a tool for connecting histories, people, and places rather than defining nations and their populations.”
From the Foreword
The cover of the catalogue offers a graphic interpretation of the title by literally going across the border. The title, positioned across the front and back cover, communicates its own meaning in a very essential way, enhancing both the three-dimensions of the catalogue and the conceptual quality of the artworks.
While, by placing the name of the artist right at the centre of the cover, close to the right edge, it was possible to create two directional axes that increase the spatial perception of the cover graphics.

The title, printed across the spine, is covered with a gloss finishing that makes it stronger and reinforces its presence on the cover, so that is possible to feel the title without opening your eyes, but simply holding the catalogue in your hands.
To avoid cracks in the finishing, there is a very thin section right on the middle of the spine that has been left without finishing. In this way, the cover becomes the stage of an invisible but sophisticated printing solution.
While on the inside cover, there is the reproduction of a magnified detail of a flag, that reveals the aesthetic and material quality of the artworks exhibited in the show.

By offering an interpretation of the art project that is essential in its graphic expression but strong in concept, the catalogue revealed itself to be an integral part of the exhibition, receiving many appreciations from both artists and designers.
